How to get a US Google Voice number on the official site
Official Voice signup: confirm you are in the US, pick a number at voice.google.com, finish ID checks, then use Messages for SMS.
You need a US number that can take SMS — bank codes, a second line, or a stable door for US contacts. If you want Google Voice, claim it on the official site voice.google.com, not from a reseller.
The query is how to get a US Google Voice number. Personal Voice is offered in the United States only. Google Voice Help — Identify Google Voice subscription types (support.google.com/voice/answer/9249103) and The end of legacy Google Voice for personal accounts (answer/9774707) — states that single-user plans and personal Voice are US-only. If you are not in the US and have no number you can verify, the free consumer path is not offered. Skip gray-market numbers, SMS farms, and someone else’s ID.
Who can get a personal number
Read the official table. The no-charge personal plan needs a personal @gmail.com account and another existing phone number to verify the account and forward calls. Google Voice Starter standalone & Standard standalone plans (answer/16515632) lists Starter at $10/month and Standard at $20/month, still for US personal Gmail. Those paid rows mark “Don’t need to verify account with another phone number,” but the number stays US-only. Under 18, non-Gmail, and Workspace-admin-managed accounts follow that page’s exclusions.
You must be in the US
Setup help says “If you're in the US, you can choose your own number.” Country availability for personal numbers is US only. Being abroad does not turn the consumer plan into a global virtual-number shop.
The free plan needs an existing phone
On Basic (no charge), “Don’t need to verify account with another phone number” is no: signup asks for a number that can receive a code, then uses it for forwarding. A number already tied to another Voice line usually cannot be reused.
The line is dead until identity checks finish
Learn about identity verification for Google Voice users (answer/16768664): new numbers cannot send or receive messages or calls until verification completes. You submit legal name, a government-issued ID, and an address.
Sign up on the official site
Steps come from Set up Google Voice (support.google.com/voice/answer/115061). Google Voice does not offer 1-800 numbers.
-
1
Open the site and sign in
On a computer, go to
voice.google.comand sign in with a personal Google Account. A work or school account whose admin bought Voice for Google Workspace is a different product, not this free personal path. -
2
Search by city or area code
Review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then Continue. Search available numbers by city or area code; if none show, try a nearby city. Click Select. Do not shop reseller lists.
-
3
Verify the existing phone on screen
The free plan asks you to take a code by SMS or a call on a number you control. Do not send that code to any “we register it for you” site.
-
4
Finish official identity verification
On the banner, Verify now → Start verification. Enter your legal name, upload clear, unexpired government ID (both sides if two-sided), submit your address, and confirm the format. Outcomes: instant pass, instant fail, or manual review (help says up to 3 business days; typically 48–72 hours). Attempts are limited.
-
5
Send a test SMS in Messages
After you pass, open Messages on the web or the official Google Voice app (Android / iPhone) and text a US number you can receive. The official table lists Unlimited SMS as US only on personal plans.
| Path | What Google writes | Can you claim a number |
|---|---|---|
| Free personal | US; personal Gmail; verify with another phone | Only in the US, with a number you can verify |
| Starter / Standard | $10 / $20 a month; still US personal Gmail | Still US-only; may skip the extra-phone check |
| Outside the US | Personal Voice is not offered | Do not buy gray-market numbers or farm SMS |
How to use the number for SMS
Stay signed in at voice.google.com on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari (Set up your phone to make & receive Google Voice calls, answer/165221). Or install the official app. Settings can link up to 6 forwarding numbers; a number already linked to another Voice line cannot be linked again.

- What if you are outside the US?
- The consumer plan is not offered. Do not assemble eligibility with rented numbers, SMS farms, or someone else’s ID. Need a US line? Use a licensed carrier, or the official flow when you are actually in the US.
- ID rejected?
- Help: same full name, current unexpired documents, all four corners, in focus, no glare; upload both sides when the ID is two-sided. Attempts are limited. Repeated failures can lock further submissions and leave the number unusable.
Keep verification codes on Google’s official pages. “We register it for you” and “guaranteed approval” are not steps in this guide.
What this has to do with a browser room
Voice solves a US SMS door, not a shared canvas. Short alignment is still open a browser and share one page. To enter a room, see create and join a space. For phones, read mobile browser notes. Keep drawings on one page: Keep the canvas on the same page. To open a room now, go to the rtcroom home page.
Still wondering?
Can I get personal Google Voice outside the US?
Per official help, personal Voice and single-user plans are US-only. Being abroad does not make the consumer plan a global virtual number. Voice for Google Workspace is a separately purchased admin product with a different country list — not this free personal flow.
Do I need a US mobile to verify?
The free plan must verify with another existing phone that can take a code. Help marks “Don’t need to verify account with another phone number” on paid Starter / Standard only, still US-only. Overseas SMS farms and rented VoIP are not official steps, and this guide does not cover them.
I picked a number. Why can’t I text yet?
Answer 16768664: new numbers cannot send or receive messages or calls until identity verification finishes. Wait for an instant result or a manual review of up to about 3 business days. Do not treat the line as live before that.
Will every site accept this number for OTP SMS?
No guarantee. Many banks and platforms reject VoIP. This tutorial only covers claiming a number on the official site and sending or receiving US SMS inside Voice Messages. If a site blocks VoIP, use a licensed number that site accepts.
